No One is Alone
One of Sondheim’s most brilliant pieces, a musical called Into the Woods, grabbed at my heart once again today. I heard this song on the radio after not hearing it for several months. Nate and I went to see this on stage last year at Emerson and I was moved to tears inumberable times. Though written in 1986 and portraying a mixed up version of all our childhood stories woven into one plot line, this show has so much to say about our world on a political, spiritual, and social level.

We watched the documentary No Impact Man this afternoon, which depicts a Fifth Avenue family in NYC attempting to make no negative impact on the environment for an entire year. I loved their passion and example, but most of all I loved the questions they asked. What seems like an insanely radical experiment simply boils down to the question: can we do what we do in a more sustainable way?
I’ve been mulling over all day all the little decisions Nate and I have made to be closer to the earth, more connected to our food sources, and more purposeful about the way we spend time together. And though sometimes I question what our impact on our world really is, today I feel like what we’re doing - the decisions we are making - are incredibly worthwhile.
So here are some of my favorite Sondheim lyrics to leave you inspired:
*
Wrong things, right things
Who can say what’s true?
Do things, fight things
You decide.
But you are not alone
Believe me, no one is alone
*
People make mistakes
Fathers, Mothers
People make mistakes
Holding to their own
Thinking their alone.
Honor their mistakes
Everyone makes
One another’s terrible mistakes.
*
You move just a finger
Say the slightest word
Something’s bound to linger
Be heard
*
Things will come out right now
We can make it so
Someone is on your side
No one is alone.
